Piano Technicians and Out-Of-Control OCD, with Jim Ialeggio
I’ll be chatting about OCD (Obsessive Compulsive Disorder); OCD not from a clinical perspective, but from a colloquial perspective, ie ”the shmoe on the street” perspective.
As piano technicians, we fixate and obsess by trade. Inevitably, focusing on the refinement and tonal perception of 88 notes, or manipulating 240-ish tuning pins, or as rebuilders making hundreds of unquantifiable decisions, or as service techs where our own OCD and our client’s OCD intersects, by trade, we are set up to over-fixate, over-think and second-guess. This behavior is part of our job description, but can often cause us anxiety and actively degrade the work, or our own perception of the work, if not understood and tamed.
As a 72 yr old poster child of OCD, I have perspective on this. I would like to share ways of thinking about it, ways of controlling it, ways of using it to our advantage, and ways of not being conned by it. Hopefully the talk will have a robust back and forth exchange!
